About the Client
Tier-1 mobile network operator in the UK
Challenge
The telco was on a mission to modernize its network infrastructure and achieve greater operational efficiency. Many of the legacy sites were no longer strategically essential, leading to higher operational costs and unnecessary complexities.
Requirements
Identify, optimize, decommission and migrate assets without disrupting customer services
Accelerate the legacy site closure process to meet regulatory deadlines
Improve energy efficiency by decommissioning legacy sites
Solution
From Legacy Complexity to Operational Efficiency
The mobile operator faced a daunting challenge: an extensive network of 450 legacy sites with outdated devices and services that were no longer fit for purpose. These sites, a patchwork of ageing technology and complex dependencies, were draining operational resources and driving up costs. The goal was clear—simplify operations, ensure a seamless transition, and achieve significant savings without compromising network reliability. It turned to TCTS for this transformation.
A Clear Path Forward
TCTS approached the challenge with precision and purpose. Their expert team conducted a comprehensive end-to-end analysis of the operator’s legacy network infrastructure. This involved validating devices, services, rings, hardware, and products to identify redundancies and inefficiencies. From the start, the focus was on optimizing paths and prioritizing low-traffic legacy devices to minimize risks. Ring healing and ceasing unnecessary network rings, ensured uninterrupted service continuity. Collaborative efforts with operator included verifying unutilized legacy services and planning for Data Communication Network (DCN) and synchronization to align with future needs.
Seamless Migration with Zero Disruptions
Migration wasn’t just about moving services but upgrading the operator’s network for long-term success. TCTS orchestrated the migration of services from legacy platforms to modernized systems with meticulous care. End-of-life products were replaced with advanced alternatives, offering the telco new upsell opportunities. By coordinating with operator’s service and account managers, TCTS ensured that every alarm was checked, every stakeholder was informed, and every customer requirement was met. This collaborative approach upheld operator’s commitment to network reliability and customer satisfaction.
Closing the Loop with Decommissioning
With services successfully migrated, TCTS turned its focus to decommissioning the obsolete infrastructure. Legacy devices were powered down and removed from network platforms, clearing the way for cleaner inventory and operational efficiency. Every step—from fibre clearance coordination to inventory updates—was carried out systematically. TCTS also recovered reusable hardware, supporting the telco’s sustainability goals while maximizing resource utilization.
